Platinum Turmeric: the brain inflammation we keep missing

A clinician-formulated turmeric blend with 95% curcuminoids, BioPerine for absorption, Boswellia, ginger root, and glucosamine. Built around the inflammation patterns we see drive brain fog, joint pain, and stalled recovery in the adults we work with.

Why Action Potential Supplements exists

Most of the cognitive problems we see in clinic don't start in the brain. They start in the body, in a chronic inflammatory load the person has been carrying for years without knowing it.

I'm Dr. Sean Orr. I trained as a neurologist and spent a decade watching the same pattern repeat: high-functioning adults arriving with brain fog, slowed processing, joint stiffness, and the gnawing sense that their thinking wasn't as sharp as it used to be. Their MRIs were clean. Their labs were "normal." The prescription pad couldn't help them, because the deficit wasn't a disease. It was a missing input.

Action Potential Supplements was built around a clinical observation. When you give the nervous system the raw materials it needs to run cleanly, the neuronutrients, the brain often follows. Not always. Not for everyone. But often enough that I wanted these formulas on a shelf the people I worked with could actually reach.

Every product in our catalog starts from that premise. We are not selling commodity supplements. We are selling the inputs we wished the people we worked with had been getting all along.

The case for turmeric, made specifically

Curcumin, the bioactive in turmeric, is one of the most-studied anti-inflammatory compounds in the natural products literature. A 2017 review in Foods catalogued 120+ controlled trials covering inflammatory arthritis, metabolic syndrome, depressive symptoms, and post-exercise muscle recovery. The signal is consistent: at clinically relevant doses, curcumin reduces inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, CRP) and modulates NF-κB signaling.

The catch is absorption. Plain curcumin is famously poorly absorbed. Bioavailability is so low that most cheap supplement-aisle turmeric never makes it to circulation. Our blend solves that two ways. It uses a 95% curcuminoid concentrate, and it pairs it with BioPerine (a piperine extract from black pepper) shown in a 1998 Planta Medica study to increase curcumin bioavailability by up to 2,000%. That is not a marketing number; it is the published mean increase across a small but well-designed crossover trial.

We also added Boswellia serrata, ginger root, MSM, glucosamine, chondroitin, and quercetin. The stack is built to address inflammation systemically, not just at one joint or one tissue. The brain inflammation literature in particular has been getting interesting; chronic low-grade systemic inflammation is increasingly implicated in midlife cognitive complaints, mood disorders, and the prodromal phase of neurodegenerative disease.

What the research actually says

Curcumin and cognitive function in older adults

An 18-month randomized controlled trial published in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry in 2018 followed 40 non-demented adults aged 51–84. The group given 90 mg of bioavailable curcumin twice daily showed measurable improvement on memory and attention testing compared to placebo, alongside reduced amyloid and tau accumulation on PET imaging in the amygdala and hypothalamus.

Small et al., Am J Geriatr Psychiatry, 2018; 26(3):266-277.

Curcumin for inflammatory joint pain

A 2016 meta-analysis in the Journal of Medicinal Food reviewed 8 randomized trials of curcumin (typically 1,000 mg/day) in patients with osteoarthritis. The pooled effect was comparable to NSAIDs for pain reduction, with a substantially better gastrointestinal safety profile. The authors specifically called out the absorption problem and noted that piperine-enhanced formulations performed better than plain turmeric powder.

Daily, Yang, and Park, J Med Food, 2016; 19(8):717-729.

Boswellia serrata and inflammatory markers

Boswellia's anti-inflammatory action runs through a different pathway than curcumin (5-lipoxygenase inhibition vs. NF-κB), which is why we paired them. A 2018 systematic review in BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies covered 7 randomized trials and concluded Boswellia produced clinically meaningful pain and function improvements in osteoarthritis, with effects detectable within 2-4 weeks.

Yu et al., BMC Complement Med Ther, 2020; 20(1):225.

The brain inflammation connection

A growing body of work, well-summarized in a 2022 review in Frontiers in Immunology, links chronic peripheral inflammation to brain inflammation via microglial activation, blood-brain barrier permeability, and circulating cytokine signaling. This is the mechanistic bridge between systemic inflammation in midlife and the cognitive complaints we hear in clinic. It also explains why anti-inflammatory interventions sometimes produce cognitive benefits people didn't expect.

Stack it for cognitive support

Turmeric handles inflammation. For the cognitive layer, our Brain Focus Nootropic Formula adds DMAE, L-Tyrosine, Bacopa monnieri, and phosphatidylserine: the neurotransmitter precursors and membrane components most customers are short on. Many of our customers run both together. Turmeric to clear the inflammatory noise, nootropic to support the signal.

Common questions

How long until I notice anything?

The published curcumin studies tend to see measurable changes in inflammatory markers within 2-4 weeks and clinical changes (pain, stiffness, cognitive measures) by week 8. Some customers notice less joint stiffness or better post-exercise recovery within the first 2 weeks. Cognitive shifts are slower and quieter. Give the bottle 60 days before deciding it isn't working.

Can I take it with my other medications?

Curcumin has documented interactions with blood thinners (warfarin, certain antiplatelets) and can affect the metabolism of some drugs through CYP3A4. If you're on prescription medications, especially anticoagulants, immunosuppressants, or chemotherapy agents, check with your prescribing physician before starting. This isn't a brush-off. It's how I'd advise someone in clinic.

The shellfish warning: what's that about?

The glucosamine in this blend is derived from shellfish. If you have a shellfish allergy, do not take this product. We are working on a vegetarian glucosamine version; in the meantime, our Brain Focus Nootropic Formula is shellfish-free and addresses brain inflammation through a different mechanism.

Subscribe and save?

Yes. The subscription option drops the per-bottle cost and ships automatically every 30 days. You can pause, change cadence, or cancel from your account at any time. Most of our long-term customers prefer it because it removes the "did I run out?" cognitive load, which, ironically, is one of the things turmeric is supposed to help with.
